I can't say enough good things about the folks I meet from the Kern River Valley. What an engaged and invested community!

Kern River Valley Community Fund Awards Inaugural Grants: Eight Kern River Valley nonprofit organizations recently received grants totaling $4,000 from the Kern River Valley Community Fund. I had the privilege of attending the awards reception with the Foundation's immediate past Board Chair, Judi McCarthy. Read more about this great accomplishment featuring local, home-grown philanthropy here.

Joe Ciriello:  I met Joe Ciriello over a year ago on a trip to the Kern River Valley, and had the chance to grab lunch with him today. He is part of a local group of engaged and invested residents of the KRV working with the Foundation to establish their own community fund. Since then, Joe has been named the Chair of the Organizing Committee for the Kern River Valley Community Fund and is leading their efforts to establish a rural affiliate of the Foundation in the Kern River Valley. Last summer, Joe and two other community leaders joined me in Kansas City for the Rural Philanthropy Conference hosted by the Council on Foundations. In his day job, Joe runs Golden State Surplus, the Army Navy store in Lake Isabella. In 2011, Joe was named Man of the Year by the Kern River Valley Chamber of Commerce.  Looking forward to good things from this philanthropic effort under Joe's leadership.
