BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The focus is on giving back to local nonprofits on Giving Day, December 3, 2013.

Nationally known as Giving Tuesday, December 3 is proclaimed as our local Giving Day by Mayor Harvey Hall and the Kern County Board of Supervisors.

Some of the local nonprofit's highlighted in the organization's publication is the Kern Golden Empire Gleaners and faith-based radio station, 88.3 Life FM.

Both nonprofits rely heavily on donations from the community to keep their operations going.

The Gleaners is a non-profit Food Bank that operates exclusively in Kern County whose mission is to alleviate hunger.

They feed about 18,000 people per month.

"We hope the Day of Giving catches on, that people add to their holiday to do list,"said Pam Fiorini, Golden Empire Gleaner.

The radio station offers a message of hope for many in the community.

KAXL is completely listener supported and their operating budget in about a half a million dollars per year to keep their operation going.

"Giving day sends a broader message for people who wouldn't normally give an intern will help more non profits throughout the county," said Doug Cowan, KAXL.
