Kern Community Foundation Awards Grant to Kern County Library Foundation
Mar 12, 2014

Kern Community Foundation held a grant presentation at the Beale Memorial Library to award a $5,000 grant from the Fred and Virginia Hamisch Charitable Fund to the Kern County Library Foundation (“Library Foundation”).

Ginny Hamisch represented the Fund and presented the grant with Kern Community Foundation President and CEO Jeffrey Pickering. Cindy Meek, President of the Library Foundation, accepted the grant along with library staff and Library Foundation Board members.

“I remember twenty-five years ago when the library opened,” said Hamisch. “It is my all-time favorite building in Bakersfield. And being a very avid reader, libraries are dear to my heart.”

In 1986, a celebration was held to commemorate the public/private partnership between the County of Kern and the Library Foundation. Kern County matched the $1.5 million raised by the Library Foundation to furnish and enhance the Beale Memorial Library. After twenty-five years, the Beale is in need of a technology update and refurbishing.

“Now we’re celebrating that we’re still here, and doing very well!” Meek said. “With a beautiful art collection, lots of technology, computer lab, we have fabulous rooms for nonprofits and the public to meet in.”

For the first time since it opened, the Library Foundation is asking the community to make donations in honor of the Beale’s twenty-fifth anniversary. “We are trying to raise $100,000 to beef up our technology,” explained Cindy. “Give it more present day meaning to kids and the community.” Currently the Library Foundation is half-way to their goal.

The Library Foundation invites the public to visit the Beale Memorial Library on April 3, 2014 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. A small reception will be held and tours will be given.

Donations can be made to the Kern County Library Foundation by mailing checks to 701 Truxtun Avenue, Bakersfield, CA 93301 or contributing online at All contributions are tax deductible (Tax ID #95-40808).
