Kern Community Foundation Awards Grants to Strengthen Local Arts and Culture Charities
Aug 2, 2012
Today, Kern Community Foundation (“Foundation”) will award approximately $50,000 in grants to strengthen local arts and culture organizations. A grant presentation will take place at 4:30 p.m. at Metro Galleries, in the heart of Bakersfield’s downtown arts district, followed by a celebratory toast catered by local restaurant and wine bar, Valentien.
Grants are being awarded from KernArts Now!, the Foundation’s grantmaking initiative focused on improving the operations and sustainability of arts and culture organizations from across Kern County. Grant recipients include the following charitable organizations: Bakersfield Museum of Art; Bakersfield Music Theatre; Buena Vista Museum of Natural History; Imagine Ballet Company of Bakersfield; Maturango Museum; Ridgecrest Chamber Music Society; and Shafter Historical Society.
“We believe philanthropy can improve the quality of life for everyone in our local communities,” said Jeff Pickering, Kern Community Foundation President and CEO. “Instead of buying performances, instruments, costumes or art supplies, however, our grants help pay for things like technology improvements, better marketing and other services that help these charities to improve their operations and hopefully become more sustainable.”
Grants from KernArts Now! are made possible, in part, through support from The James Irvine Foundation. Future grants will be made possible through contributions from local donors to the KernArts Now! Fund, as well as contributions made directly to the arts and culture organizations through Kern Community Foundation’s online Nonprofit Search.
In addition to the competitive grants, a KernArts Match Challenge has been issued to help all ten organizations that applied to KernArts Now! to raise money online using their profile and the tools available through the Foundation’s Nonprofit Search. Up to $1,000 in matching funds are available for online gifts made to each qualified organization through their Nonprofit Search profiles by August 31, 2012. More information can be found by visiting www.kernfoundation.org and clicking “Nonprofit Search.”
