Women's and Girls' Fund Annual Luncheon

The Women’s and Girls’ Fund of the Kern Community Foundation held their annual luncheon at Seven Oaks Country Club to recognize women leaders in philanthropy and announce the 2009 grant recipients.

Stella McMurtrey and East High School student Nicole Mercado were selected for this year’s Women Defining Philanthropy award.  The Women's and Girls' Fund will honor them by giving a $500 donation on behalf of Nicole to the Bakersfield Relay for Life – East High Team, and a $250 donation to the SPCA and $250 to the Assistance League Scholarship Program on behalf of Stella.

2009 Women’s and Girls’ Fund grant recipients are:

  • $4,000 to the Kern High School District Foundation for Foothill High School to mentor African American female students to complete their A-G course requirements, making them eligible for CSU and UC systems.
  • $7,000 to Garden Pathways to partially fund administrative support staff so that Garden Pathways can recruit up to 50 new mentors, expanding their capacity to mentor at-risk youth and adults.
  • $9,000 to the Kernville USD Family Resource Center to mentor junior high female students from single-parent families at risk of losing their children.
