Derek Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Derek Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund ("Fund") was established in 2016 to preserve the legacy of Derek Brown. The permanent endowed scholarship fund provides academic support to student athletes from Sherman E. Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, CA. 

Who is eligible to receive the scholarship?

The Fund provides financial assistance in the form of one-time scholarships to students who are U.S. citizens, and graduates of Sherman E. Burroughs High School who demonstrate motivation, perseverance and a sincere desire to pursue a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. There shall be no discrimination in the selection of students for aid based upon gender, race, religion, country of origin, or parentage.

Scholarship are provided to students who demonstrate financial need, and may be used for education related expenses such as tuition, equipment (including calculators and computers), supplies, food, lodging and clothing. Funding may be provided for study abroad if it is part of a school's formal course of study. Funding shall not be provided for extracurricular activities not part of an educational program, such as vacations or participation in private social, religious or political activities.

In order to receive financial assistance from the Fund, students are required to have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 at the time of application. 

How to apply for the scholarship?

To apply for funding from the Derek Brown Memorial Scholarship, please apply though our common application by March 10th or the Derek Brown Memorial Scholarship application by March 24th.

How are scholarship recipients selected?

Scholarship recipients are selected by a scholarship committee and approved by Kern Community Foundation's Board of Directors.
